At certain points the sequence will go into slow motion for a brief time, which is when both characters choose to execute a horizontal or vertical strike, kick, or even block or dodge. At first, you might mistake it for a scripted sequence, but it’s not. The new Reversal Edge mechanic starts a cool sequence where you see the two fighters barely dodging attacks, swords clashing when they attack at the same time, and one finding the right timing to counter the other, allowing you to barely dodge and counter attacks in the heat of the moment. Like other fighting games, throws are effective against a blocking opponent. There’s a guard button for blocking regular attacks, and if you tap forward and guard at the same time, you can initiate a Guard Impact that can parry an incoming attack if timed right. You can make either horizontal or vertical strikes, and kicks are useful for knocking your opponent off balance.
The main game mechanics of Soul Calibur VI are pretty close to previous games in the series. Compared to 2017’s For Honor, which took a more realistic approach to sword fighting, Soul Calibur VI’s arcade-like presentation feels nostalgic yet refreshing at the same time. Parry an attack, and Calibur creates tension by going into a very brief slow-motion sequence.
